Enabling military and public safety networks to access and share data across enhanced coverage zones
Communications systems for armed forces, public safety officials, and other agencies are notoriously voice-oriented in their analog push-to-talk, land mobile radio (LMR) roots. Just as consumers enjoy sharing information via data applications like pictures and videos, these groups increasingly depend on access to data. In emergencies, disparate teams and agencies may need to share and access large files such as maps, building layouts, and video footage. Because of their oftenisolated locations, these groups also rely primarily on rapidly deployed ad hoc networks. To enable such applications quickly, groups ranging from emergency responders to military organizations are leveraging the consumer-first technologies, Long Term Evolution (LTE) and wireless local area networking (WLAN).
Most military and public safety agencies want different capabilities that provide improved situational awareness. The higher data rates and increased coverage afforded by LTE and WLAN provide this awareness. An example is combining geographic information, such as maps and building blueprints, with high-definition images and video from drones, personnel, and other sources at the scene.
