Today’s CPUs and RAM ensure latencies so low that it is possible to map immense amounts of data spread over several servers within a fraction of a second. But can the rest of the network infrastructure can keep pace? Explosively growing amounts of data from cloud-based services, video streaming, and IoT-connected devices, to name a few, is an enormous challenge. The bit-rate efficiency needs to increase at every stage of the data journey to avoid bottlenecks in the near future.
While digital-coding schemes using on/off-keying (OOK) were once sufficient, they cannot keep up with data transfer rates of 100 gigabits per second (Gbps) and higher. Transferring data over existing fiber infrastructures requires more efficient techniques to ensure growing data demands.
