LoRa® – Long Range Wireless Technology in Support of IoT Applications
LoRa (Long Range) is a wireless technology that has been developed to enable low data rate communications to be made over long distances by sensors and actuators for M2M and Internet of Things (IoT) applications. LoRaWANTM, developed by the LoRa Alliance™, an open association of collaborating members, is a Low Power, Wide Area (LPWA) networking protocol specification that is built on top of the LoRa technology and operates on license-free sub-GHz frequencies. This Application Note offers an introduction to some key LoRa device RF measurement challenges and offers guidance to how users can overcome these using Keysight’s test solutions.
The LoRa technology offers two alternative modulation schemes; GFSK (Gaussian Frequency Shift Keying) and LoRa modulation. The LoRa modulation scheme, developed by Semtech Corporation, is a Chirp Spread Spectrum (CSS) technology that increases the receiver sensitivity by processing the gain. The data rates of the LoRa CSS system depend on aspects including Spreading Factor, bandwidth and channel code rate where the typical bandwidths are 125KHz, 250KHz or 500KHz. It is important for a LoRa test solution to support above mentioned parameters in order to verify the performance of the device.
